Unzen National Park was established in 1934 as one of Japan’s first national parks. In 1956, the Amakusa region was added, creating Unzen-Amakusa National Park. July 20, 2026, marks the 70th anniversary of the Amakusa region becoming a national park. Amakusa is an area that attracts attention from cyclists, as it has many routes that are comfortable to ride on, with relatively little elevation change and few traffic lights. We will introduce information useful for cycle tourism, such as riding while admiring the scenic views of “Unzen Amakusa National Park AMAKUSA,” resting in free footbaths when you get tired, and enjoying Amakusa’s local cuisine.
Amakusa World Cultural Heritage Site
We’ll introduce you to the joys of a trip that allows you to experience the lives and beliefs of the people of Sakitsu, as well as the many legacies that have been passed down in this land.
The Sakitsu settlement in Amakusa, designated in 2018 as one of the constituent sites of the World Cultural Heritage site “Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region,” is a place where Buddhism, Shintoism, and Christianity coexisted during the period of religious persecution, fostering a unique form of faith specific to this fishing village. The settlement’s symbol, the Sakitsu Church, and other historical sites such as shrines where prayers were offered remain unchanged to this day.
