When it comes to traditional crafts in Amakusa, the world-renowned “Amakusa Ceramics” comes to mind. Since you’re here, why not try your hand at making pottery, a craft that exudes the warmth of clay? “Depending on the combination of clay and glaze, an infinite number of textures can be created. The way it transforms into something truly unique is both the fun and the challenge of pottery,” says Naomi Miyoshi, the head of Unshu Kiln. She’ll kindly teach even beginners.

Shimoda Hot Spring Town

Shimoda Onsen is famous as a superb sunset spot with panoramic views of the East China Sea. The source water temperature is 51℃, and the bath water is 40-42℃. It is a natural hot spring with no added water, heating, or circulation. There are several accommodations in the hot spring town, so find your favorite place to stay.

This is a superb viewpoint to admire the beautiful rock formations created by the rough waves of the Amakusa Sea. If the weather is good and you’re lucky, you can even see the Nomozaki Peninsula in Nagasaki. A walking path leads down from the viewpoint to the coastline. The rock faces of the strangely shaped rocks are breathtaking when viewed up close! It has also been selected as one of “Japan’s Top 100 Sunset Spots,” making it a popular romantic spot to watch the sun sink below the horizon!

This is a representative scenic spot on the west coast of Amakusa, designated as a national scenic spot and natural monument in 1935. When viewed from the side of the Thirteen Buddhas Park, it resembles an elephant and is known by the nickname “Elephant Rock.” It is also a popular spot for scuba diving!

Sakitsu Church is one of the constituent sites of the “Hidden Christian Sites in the Nagasaki Region.” The interior of the church is covered with tatami mats, which is rare, and the altar is said to be located where the “fumi-e” (trampling on a Christian image) was once performed. Faith has been carefully preserved here from the time of the ban on Christianity to the present day. Also known as the “Cathedral of the Sea,” its imposing Gothic silhouette with a cross atop a spire stands in the quiet fishing port.

Ushibuka Kaisaikan Roadside Station

This roadside station overlooks the Ushibuka Haiya Bridge. The spacious grounds include a large fish tank where you can enjoy watching fish swimming leisurely. The souvenir shop is lined with Ushibuka’s specialty processed fish products. Smoked sardine paste, “bakudan” (boiled eggs wrapped in fish paste and deep-fried), and zasushi (dried fish paste) that makes a rich and flavorful broth are all perfect souvenirs! The Ushibuka specialty confection “akamaki,” which consists of red bean paste wrapped in sponge cake and red mochi, is also very photogenic.

Miyajidake Kakashi no Sato Roadside Station

The former Miyajidake Elementary School building has been renovated and reopened as “Michi-no-Eki Miyajidake Kakashi no Sato” (Roadside Station Miyajidake Scarecrow Village)! Over 500 unique scarecrows will welcome you. In addition to a product shop lined with freshly harvested vegetables and agricultural products, there is a restaurant where you can enjoy handmade soba noodles made with locally produced buckwheat flour, and you can also try making soba noodles yourself (reservations required). You can also enjoy permanent exhibits in the classrooms, such as scenes of scarecrows attending classes.
